If you would like to learn more about participating in the work of our club, please visit one of our monthly meetings.

At our meetings we conduct club business, prepare and organize our shows, socialize with other members, and learn about other breeds, nutrition, and training techniques.

Our meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the training annex building of the American Red Cross on the NE corner of 5th Street and Gunnison Ave.in Grand Junction.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I have to own and show purebred dogs to participate in GVKC?

Owning a purebred dog is not necessary to participate in GVKC club activities. However, in order to enter your dog in GVKC Confirmation shows or matches, your dog must be both purebred and eligible to enter the show or match under the rules of the American Kennel Club.

Do you offer obedience, agility, or show dog classes?

GVKC offers training classes in the Fall and Spring and other times, when we have enough interest to form a class. (See the Training page). During the summer we try to hold practice sessions for those that have previously taken classes. There is generally a small fee to have an instructor present and to pay for our place of training. Sharing the experience in a relaxed atmosphere has proven to be very helpful. We are fortunate to have many people in our membership who are trainers in all aspects of dog shows, including: Conformation, Obedience, Agility, Rally, Canine Good Citizenship, and Therapy dogs. At this time the GVKC does not offer Agility.

Can you help me find a purebred dog?

While the GVKC does not recommend any particular breed or breeder, we can direct you to many helpful resources.

The American Kennel Club has excellent online information about how to adopt a purebred dog and how to find a dog that might be right for you. The AKC also has information about each recognized dog breed, including breeder and rescue referral resources.

Please give a homeless purebred dog a home! To inquire about a rescue purebred dog in your area, you may wish to visit your local animal shelter or check out an informative guide, Colorado's Health Testing Breeders by Jeanne Cook, which can be very helpful in finding quality pets and/or show dogs.

Finally, please come visit our annual dog show at the end of each summer. Check this Web site for the exact date of the next dog show. There you can see representatives from most all of the AKC recognized breeds. The shows are a great place to see and learn about the breeds you may be interested in.
